Mary M. "Marty" Replogle (1928-2010)
Mary Martha Replogle, long time Brookside resident, died at her home on Sunday afternoon, September 5th, 2010 at the age of 82. Mary, known by all as "Marty", was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 7, 1928 to Wallace Hutchinson McCurdy and Martha Elizabeth (Rainey) McCurdy and was raised in their home in Crafton, PA. Marty graduated from Wilson College with a B.A. in English and from the University of Pittsburgh with an M.A. in English before going on to earn her teaching certificate. In the early 1950's she worked with disabled children at the D.T. Watson Home for Crippled Children which had been selected by Dr. Jonas Salk for the first clinical trials of his polio vaccine.
Marty united in marriage with Joe O. Replogle in 1955 in Pittsburgh, and the couple settled briefly in Morristown, NJ before moving to Brookside where they have resided ever since and have raised their five children, three of whom survive. Marty was an active leader in church and community, serving on the Mendham Twp PTA, as Cub Scout Den Mother, Church School Superintendent and teacher and many other positions at the United Methodist Church in Morristown and substitute elementary school teacher. After the death of their teenage son Keith, Marty and her husband founded and led the Morris Area chapter of The Compassionate Friends for over a decade, helping other parents cope with the premature deaths of their children. After her children had grown, Marty worked in the Methodist Church Conference offices in Chatham as the Audi-Visual Librarian.
Marty enjoyed traveling, crossing the country several times on family camping vacations and later touring Europe, China and Australia. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and her six grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, as well as her daughter Katrina Replogle and partner Chris Eng of Sayre, PA, her son Kriss Replogle, his wife Debbie Replogle and their two children, also of Brookside, and her daughter Karalyn Replogle Colopy, her husband Joe Colopy and their four children of Durham, NC.
